What We Believe

Obeying the Spirit’s Leading - Lifting High the Name of Jesus - Standing Firm on God’s Word

We believe…

God

There is only one God. God eternally exists as the Holy Trinity: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. God is holy in all his ways. He is invisible, omniscient, omnipresent and omnipotent. The Father’s holy nature lovingly sustains and maintains creation via limitless power, boundless love and inexhaustible mercy. The Father’s judgments are perfect.

God is One

“Hear, O Israel!  The Lord is our God, the Lord is one!”  (Deuteronomy 6:4)

“…one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all who is over all and through all in all.”  (Ephesians 4:5-6)

“For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.”  (I Timothy 2:5)

God is the Creator and Sustainer of All Things

“Do you not know?  Have you not heard?  The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth.”  (Isaiah 40:28)

“Therefore, let those also who suffer according to the will of God entrust their souls to a faithful Creator in doing what is right.”  (I Peter 4:19)

“Worthy are You, our Lord and God, to receive glory, and honor and power; for You did create all things, and because of Your will they existed, and were created.”  (Revelation 4:11)

God is Perfect in His Work, Way and Will

“Therefore you are to be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.”  (Matthew 5:48)

“The Rock!  His work is perfect, for all His ways are just; a God of faithfulness and without injustice, righteous and upright is He.” (Deuteronomy 32:4)

“As for God, His way is blameless; the word of the Lord is tested.  He is a shield to all who take refuge in Him.”  (II Samuel 22:31)

“And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.”  (Romans 12:2)

God is a Trinity of Three Persons: Father, Son Holy Spirit

“And Jesus, when He was baptized, went up straightaway out of the water; and, lo, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God  descending as a dove, and coming upon Him, a behold, a voice out of the heavens, saying,

“This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased..”  (Matthew 3:16-17)

“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and the Son and the Holy Spirit.”  (Matthew 28:19)

“… according to the foreknowledge of God the Father; by the sanctifying work of the Spirit, that you may obey Jesus Christ and be sprinkled with His blood:  May grace and peace be yours in fullest measure.”  (I Peter 1:2)

Above All Else, God is Holy

“And one called out to another and said, ‘Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord of Hosts!  The whole earth is full of His glory!’”  (Isaiah 6:3)

“And the four living creatures, each one of them having six wings, are full of eyes around and within; and day and night they do not cease to say, ‘Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord God, the Almighty, who was and is and is to come!’”  (Revelation 4:8)

“For I am the Lord your God.  Consecrate yourselves and be holy; for I am holy.”  (Leviticus 11:44a)

Jesus Christ

Jesus Christ is the Son of God.  He is the fullness of God made flesh; born fully human of the Virgin Mary, but without sin.  He lived on earth as God’s servant, teaching humanity what it is to love God and love others.  He laid down His life to satisfy God’s penalty for the sins of humankind.  He rose bodily from the grave in triumph over death.  He ascended to heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father to intercede for all who put their faith in him.  He will come again to establish his kingdom of love and light, destroy death and make all things new.

Jesus Christ is Fully God and Fully Man

“Have this attitude in yourselves that was also in Jesus Christ, who, though He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God something to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men.” (Philippians 2:6–11)

“For in Him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form.” (Colossians 2:9)

“Jesus said to them, ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am.’” (John 8:59)

He was Sent by the Father

“But the witness I have is greater than that of John; for the works which the Father has given Me to accomplish, the very works that I do, bear witness of Me, that the Father has sent me.” (John 5:36)

“No one can come to Me, unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up on the last day.” (John 6:44)

“Jesus therefore said to them again, ‘Peace be with you; as the Father has sent Me, I also send you.’’’ (John 20:21)

He was Conceived by the Holy Spirit

“Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows. When His mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit.” (Matthew 1:18)

“Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for that which has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.” (Matthew 1:20b)

“And the angel answered and said to her, ‘The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; and for that reason the holy offspring shall be called the Son of God.’” (Luke 1:35)

He was Born of the Virgin, Mary

And Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I am a virgin?’ And the angel answered and said to her, ‘The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of Most High will overshadow you; and for that reason the holy offspring shall be called the Son of God.’ (Luke 1:34–38)

“And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David, in order to register, along with Mary, who was engaged to him, and was with child. And it came about that while they were there, the days were completed for her to give birth. And she gave birth to her first-born son; and she wrapped Him in cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.” (Luke 2:4-7)

“And they came into the house and saw the Child with Mary his mother; and they fell down and worshiped Him; and opening their treasures they presented to Him gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.” (Matthew 2:11)

He Died on the Cross, the Just for the Unjust

“For it was the Father’s good pleasure for all the fullness to dwell in Him, and through Him to reconcile all things unto himself, having made peace through the blood of His cross; through Him, I say, whether things on earth or things in heaven. And although you were formerly alienated and hostile in mind, engaged in evil deeds, yet He has now reconciled you in His fleshly body through death, in order to present you before Him holy and blameless and beyond reproach.” (Colossians 1:19-22)

“For Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, in order that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit.”(1 Peter 3:18)

“…how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works, to serve the living God?” (Hebrews 9:14)

He Died as a Sacrifice for us in Our Place

“The next say he saw Jesus coming to Him, and said, ‘Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world’…” (John 1:29)

“He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, that we might become the righteousness of God.” (II Corinthians 5:21)

“But we do see Him who has been made a little lower than the angels, namely, Jesus, because of the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, that by the grace of God He might taste death for everyone.” (Hebrews 2:9)

He Justifies all Who Believe in Him on the Basis of His Shed Blood

“Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him.” (Romans 5:9)

“But now in Christ Jesus you who formerly were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.” (Ephesians 2:13)

“We have an altar, from which those who serve the tabernacle have no right to eat. For the bodies of those animals whose blood is brought into the holy place by the high priest as an offering for sin, are burned outside the camp. Therefore, Jesus also, that He might sanctify the people through His own blood, suffered outside the gate.” (Hebrews 13:11-12)

He Rose Bodily From the Dead According to the Scriptures

“And the angel answered and said to the women, ‘Do not be afraid; for I know that you are looking for Jesus who has been crucified. He is not here, for He has risen, just as He said. Come, and see the place where He was lying. And go quickly and tell His disciples that He has risen from the dead’…” (Matthew 28:5-7)

“Why do you seek the living One among the dead? He is not here, but He is risen. Remember how He spoke to you while He was still in Galilee, saying that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again? And they remembered His words, and returned from the tomb, and reported all these things to the apostles." (Luke 24:5-9)

“For I delivered unto you that which I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures.” (1 Corinthians. 15:3)

He is at God’s Right Hand Serving as our Great High Priest

“But from now on the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God.” (Luke 22:69)

“This Jesus God raised up again, to which we are all witnesses. Therefore having been exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He has poured forth this which you both see and hear. (Acts 2:32-33)

“Now the main point in what has been said is this: we have such a high priest, who has taken His seat at the right hand of the Majesty in the heavens.” (Hebrews 8:1)

He Will Come Again and Establish His Kingdom of Righteousness

“For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; and the government will rest on His shoulders; and His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace, over the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness from then on to evermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will accomplish this.” (Isaiah 9:6–7)

“In my Father’s house are many dwelling places; if it were not so I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also.” (John 14:2-3)

“Behold, He is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see Him, even those who pierced Him; and all the tribes of the earth will mourn over Him. Even so, Amen.” (Revelation 1:7)

Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Triune God, and is present and active in the world. He is invisible, omniscient, omnipresent and omnipotent.  He is the Comforter promised to us by Jesus.  The Holy Spirit was sent to the church in His fullness at Pentecost. By the Holy Spirit Christ lives in, empowers and equips his church to serve Him and grow into His likeness.  It is via the Holy Spirit that God is made real in the material world, that the gospel is filled with power, and that the kingdom of God is made undeniable in the world of men.

The Holy Spirit is a Divine Person of the Trinity

“And it will come about after this that I will pour out my Spirit on all mankind; and your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions. And even on the male and female servants I will pour out my Spirit in those days.” (Joel 2:28-29)

“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit…” (Matthew 28:19)

“And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; that is, the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not behold Him, or know Him; but you know Him because He abides with you, and will be in you. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you." (John 14:16–18)

The Holy Spirit was Sent by the Father and the Son to Indwell, Guide, and Teach all Who Believe in Jesus Christ

“But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper shall not come to you; but if I go I will send Him to you.” (John 16:7)

“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.” (John 14:26)

“Now we have received, not the spirit of this world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things freely given to us by God, which things we also speak, not in words taught by human wisdom, but in those taught by the Spirit, combining spiritual thoughts with spiritual words. But a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit; for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised.” (I Corinthians 2:12-14)

The Holy Spirit Empowers Those He Indwells with Spiritual Gifts

“… God also bearing witness with them, both by signs and wonders and by various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit according to His own will.” (Hebrews 2:4)

“For just as we have many members in one body and all the members do not have the same function, so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another. And since we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let each exercise them accordingly…” (Romans 12:4-5)

“Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not wish you to be unaware… Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are varieties of ministries, but the same Lord. And there are varieties of effects, but the same God who works all things in all persons. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another the effecting miracles, and to another prophecy, and to another the distinguishing of Spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues. But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.” (I Corinthians 12:1, 4-7, 11)

The Holy Spirit Bears His Fruit in Every Believer

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against these things there is no law. (Galatians 5:22-23)

He Convicts the World of Sin, of Righteousness, and of Judgement

“And He, when He comes, will convict the world, concerning sin, and righteousness and judgment; concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me; and concerning righteousness because I go to the Father, and you no longer behold Me; and concerning judgment because the ruler of this world has been judged. (John 16:7–11)

Holy Bible

We hold to the divine inspiration, truthfulness and authority of the Old and New Testaments of the Holy Bible. It is the only written Word of God, inerrant as originally given and in all it affirms. The Scriptures are the only and divine rule of our faith and its practice. The Holy Spirit preserves God’s Word in the church even to this day, and by that Word communicates God’s truth to the peoples of every age who are privileged to internalize it.

Learn More About our Belief in Scripture

The Holy Bible was Inspired by God

“All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.” (II Timothy 3:16-17)

“But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation, for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.” (II Peter 1:20-21)

The Holy Bible is God’s Sole Rule for Christian Faith and Practice

“But He answered and said, ‘It is written, man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.’” (Matthew 4:4)

“…and know that from childhood you have known the sacred writings which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.” (II Timothy 3:15-17)

“Sanctify them in the truth; Thy word is truth.” (John 17:17) “For the word of the Lord is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. (Hebrews 4:12)

People

Human beings were created in the image of God. However, this image was marred in every part through the disobedience of our first parents. As a result humanity’s intimacy with God was destroyed; and all people inherit a bent towards sin and selfishness. Human intimacy with God can only be restored via faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and his atoning work. God, via His prevenient grace (that is, His grace which “goes before’), restored moral sensibility to all humanity. This great mercy enables all to have the capacity to respond to His love, and choose to accept Jesus’ great rescue plan. The reward of those who place their faith in Him is everlasting joy and bliss; but the portion of the impenitent and unbelieving is suffering eternal separation from God.

God Made People in His Own Image

“And God created man in his own image, in the image of God, He created them; male and female He created them.” (Genesis 1:27)

This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day when God created man, He made him in the likeness of God.” (Genesis 5:1)

“Do not lie to one another, since you laid aside the old self with its evil practices, and have put on the new self who is being renewed to a true knowledge according to the image of the One who created him…” (Colossians 3:9-10)

The Sin of Our First Parents Shattered Human Intimacy with God

“Then to Adam He said, ‘Because you have listened to the voice of your wife, and have eaten of the tree about which I commanded you, saying, “You shall not eat from it;” cursed is the ground because of you. In toil you shall eat of it all the days of your life. Both thorns and thistles it will grow for you; and you shall eat of the plants of the field. By the sweat of your face you will eat bread, ‘til you return to the ground, because from it you were taken. For you are dust and to dust you shall return.” (Genesis 3:17-19)

“Therefore, the Lord God sent him out of the garden of Eden, to cultivate the ground from which he was taken. He drove the man out; and at the east of the garden He stationed the cherubim, and the flaming sword which turned every direction, to guard the way to the tree of life.” (Genesis 3:23-24)

“… through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned…” (Romans 5:12)

Thus, All People Have Inherited a Sin Nature and Alienation from God

“The fool has said in his heart, ‘There is no God.’ They are corrupt, they have committed abominable deeds. There is no one who does good. The Lord has looked down from heaven upon the sons of men, to see if there are any who understand, who seek after God. They have all turned aside. Together they have become corrupt. There is no one who does good, not even one.” (Psalm 14:1-3)

“…for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23)

“There is none righteous, not even one. There is no one who understands. There is no one who seeks for God. All have turned aside, together they have become useless. There is no one who does good. Their throat is an open grave, with their tongues they keep deceiving. The poison of asps is under their lips. Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness. Their feet are swift to shed blood. Destruction and misery are in their paths, and the path of peace have they not known. There is no fear of God in their eyes.” (Romans 3:10-18)

All People Suffer Death Because of Sin

“And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, ‘From any tree of the garden you may eat freely; but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat. For in the day you eat from it you shall surely die.’” (Genesis 2:16-17)

“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 3:23)

“Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned.” (Romans 5:12)

Salvation From Sin is Only Possible Through Jesus Christ

“I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but through Me.” (John 14:6)

“But now Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who were asleep. For since by a man came death, by a man also came the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all shall be made alive. But each in his own order; Christ the first fruits, after that those who are Christ’s at His command.” (I Corinthians 15:20-23)

“For this reason I endure all things for the sake of the elect, so that they may obtain the salvation, which is in Jesus Christ, with eternal glory.” (II Timothy 2:10)

Church

The universal Church is the people of God composed of all those who believe in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord throughout time and across the planet. Jesus is the Head of the Church. The Church is His body. He has ordered the Church to go into the world to make disciples of all nations, to baptize them, and to teach them all of His commands.

A faithful local church makes the universal church visible in the world wherever believers join together to: worship God, be built up through Bible preaching and teaching, pray, enjoy each other’s company, share the Gospel with the lost, receive the sacraments and live authentically as Jesus’ disciples via acts of love and service to God, to one another and to those in need.

Christ is the Head of the Church - His Body

“And He put all things in subjection under His feet, and gave Him as Head over all things to the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.” (Ephesians 1:22-23)

“… Christ also is the head of the church, He Himself being the Savior of the body.” (Ephesians 5:23)

“And He is the head of the body, the church; who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that He Himself will come to have first place in everything.” (Colossians 1:18)

Jesus Commanded His Church to Bring His Message to the World

“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age. (Matthew 28:19-20)

“And He said to them, ‘Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.’” (Mark 16:15)

“…but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the end of the earth.” (Acts 1:8)

The Church is a Fellowship

“So then, those who had received his word were baptized; and there were added that day about 3000 souls. And they were continually devoting themselves to the apostle’s teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. And everyone kept feeling a sense of awe; and many wonders and signs were taking place through the apostles. And those who had believed were together, and had all things in common; and they began selling their property and possessions, and were sharing them with all, as anyone might have need. And day by day continuing with one mind in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they were taking their meals together with gladness and sincerity of heart, praising God, and having favor with all the people. And the Lord was adding to their number day by day those who were being saved. (Acts 2:41-47)

“And let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the day drawing near.” (Hebrews 10:24-25)

Salvation

God graciously justifies and regenerates all who trust in Jesus Christ. By His grace, He saves his faithful ones from sin, death, hell and the grave. This great rescue plan of salvation is universal: available and offered to all people. It is appropriated and made effective in anyone’s life by his or her individual faith. It results in one’s adoption as God’s child, one’s welcome into God’s kingdom of love and light; and the receipt of eternal life. Salvation initiates the sanctifying work of the indwelling Holy Spirit in a believer’s life.

Jesus’ Sacrifice Made Salvation Available for all People

“For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world should be saved through Him.” (John 3:17)

“For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all men.” (II Timothy 2:11)

“…and He Himself is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world.” (I John 2:2)

People are Saved by Grace Through Faith in Jesus Christ

“But we believe that we are saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus, in the same way as they also are.” (Acts 15:11)

“But now apart from the Law the righteousness of God has been manifested, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all those who believe for there is no distinction; for all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God, being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus…” (Romans 3:21-24)

“For by the grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not of yourselves, it is the gift of God.” (Ephesians 2:8)

The Saved are Born Again of the Holy Spirit

“Jesus answered and said to him, ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God… unless on is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’” (John 3:3, 5-7)

“But when the kindness of God our Savior and His love for mankind appeared, He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, that being justified by his grace we might be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.” (Titus 3:4-7)

The Saved are Given Entry to Jesus’ Kingdom

“For He delivered us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.” (Colossians 1:13-14)

“…We were encouraging and imploring each one of you as a father would his own children, so that you may walk in a manner worthy of the God who calls you into His own kingdom and glory.” (I Thessalonians 2:11-12)

“Therefore, brethren, be all the more diligent to make certain about His calling and choosing you; for as long as you practice these things, you will never stumble; for in this way the entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will be abundantly supplied to you.” (II Peter 1:10-11)

The Saved are Granted Eternal Life

“For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who beholds the Son and believes in Him, may have eternal life; and I Myself will raise him up on the last day.” (John 4:40)

“…the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 6:23b)

“It is a trustworthy statement, deserving full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, among whom I am foremost of all. And yet for this reason I found mercy, in order that in me as the foremost, Jesus Christ might demonstrate His perfect patience, as an example for those who would believe in Him for eternal life.” (I Timothy 1:15-16)

The Saved are Adopted as God’s Children

“But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become the children of God, even to those who believe in His name.” (John 1:12)

“For those who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. For you have not received a spirit of slavery which leads to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, ‘Abba! Father!’ The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.” (Romans 8:14-16)

“But when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law, in order that He might redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive the adoption as sons. And because you are sons, God sent for the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, ‘Abba! Father!’” (Galatians 4:4-6)

Sanctification

Sanctification means that which is separated or set aside to God and for His possession and use. Thus, sanctification and holiness are synonymous. Sanctification is the spiritual process the Holy Spirit uses to make people holy and set apart for God’s use. God wants each believer to be filled with the Holy Spirit and be wholly sanctified, for only through holiness should a believer expect to be used by God. Being sanctified is the only way for a believer to hope to remain separate from the world of sin and to be effective in his or her obedience and service to Holy God.

The Holy Spirit is the sole agent of our sanctification. It is via the indwelling of the Holy Spirit that believers receive the power to perform all that God calls them to do, to say and to become. Sanctification begins at salvation and is a progressive, relational experience worked out in obedient partnership with Holy Spirit in the lives of all who believe.

The Apostle Paul desired that each believer should allow God to sanctify him or her completely, promising that God is faithful and would bring it to pass. Via sanctifying grace the Holy Spirit delivers believers from all rebellion against God. This grace also makes it possible for a believer to wholehearted love God and others. Even being entirely sanctified through grace does not make believers faultless or incapable of sin. Even mature, holy believers must walk daily with Jesus by faith in the forgiveness and cleansing only He can provide.

“Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Faithful is He who calls you, and He will bring it to pass.” (I Thessalonians 5:23-24)

“For God has not called us for the purpose of impurity, but in sanctification.” (I Thessalonians 4:7)

“…but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be my witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and all Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.” (Acts 1:8)

“…be filled with the Holy Spirit.” (Ephesians 5:18)

“But we should always give thanks to God for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God has chosen you from the beginning for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and faith in the truth.” (II Thessalonians 2:13)

“to those… who are chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father by the sanctifying work of the Spirit, that you may obey Jesus Christ and be sprinkled with His blood.” (I Peter 1:1b-2)

Assurance of Believers

All those who believe in Jesus Christ are assured that they are saved and belong to God. This inward witness occurs in three ways: The witness of the Holy Spirit to their spirits, by believing God’s gracious promises in the Scriptures, and by manifesting the fruit of the Holy Spirit in their daily lives;

Assurance Comes Via the Witness of the Holy Spirit

“The Spirit Himself bears witness to our spirit that we are children of God.” (Romans 8:16)

“… for our gospel did not come to you in word only, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full assurance; just as you know what kind of men we proved to be among you for your sake.” (I Thessalonians 1:5)

Assurance Comes by Trusting God’s Character and Promises

“… so that their hearts may be encouraged, having been held together in love, even unto all the wealth of the full assurance of understanding, unto the full knowledge of God’s mystery, that is, Christ Himself.” (Colossians 2:2)

“And we desire that each one of you show the same diligence so as to realize the full assurance of hope until the end, that you may not be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises. For when God made the promise to Abraham, since He could swear by no one greater, He swore by Himself, saying, ‘I will surely bless you, and I will surely multiply you.’ And thus, having patiently waited, he attained the promise.” (Hebrews 6:10-15)

“…let us draw near with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.” (Hebrews 10:22)

“Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” (Hebrews 11:1)

Assurance Comes When the Fruit of the Spirit are Manifested

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against these things there is no law.” (Galatians 5:22-23)

The Eschaton

The Second Coming of Jesus Christ is imminent. On that day the earth and the seas shall give up their dead unto a bodily resurrection of all persons: the just and the unjust. The former will be raised to rewards and eternal life. The latter will be resurrected unto judgment and punishment.

Jesus' Return Motivates us to Live for Him

“Blessed are those slave whom the master shall find on the alert when he comes; truly, I say to you, that he will gird Himself to serve, and have them recline at the table, and will come up and wait on them.”

“Behold, I am coming quickly, and my reward is with Me, to render to every man according to what he has done.” (Revelation 22:12)

“For the grace of God has appeared bringing salvation to all men, instructing us to deny ungodliness and worldly desires and to live sensibly, righteously and godly in the present age, looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ; who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good deeds. (Titus 2:11-14)

There Will be a Bodily Resurrection

“Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming, in which all who are in the tombs shall hear His voice, and shall come forth; those who did good deeds to the resurrection of life, those who committed the evil deeds to a resurrection of judgment.” (John 5:28-29)

“Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me shall live, even if he dies, and everyone who lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?’” (John 11:25-26)

“But now Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who are asleep. For since by a man came death, by a man also came the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all shall be made alive.” (I Corinthians 15:20-22)

Some will Inherit Eternal Life, While Others Will Garner Eternal Punishment

“For the Son of Man is going to come with His angels in the glory of His Father, and then He will repay each person according to what he has done.” (Matthew 16:27)

“And all the nations will be gathered before Him; and He will separate them from one another, as the shepherd separates the sheep from the goats; and He will put the sheep on His Right and the Goats on His left. Then the King will say to those on His right, ‘Come, you who are blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world’… Then He will also say to those on His left, ‘Depart from Me, accursed ones, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels… And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.” (Matthew 25:32-34, 41, 46)

“He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.” (John 3:36)

God Wins! Evil in its Myriad Forms will be Defeated. Jesus will Establish His kingdom of Love and Light in a New Heaven and a New Earth

“But according to His promise we are looking for a new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells.” (II Peter 3:13)

“And I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth passed away, and there was no longer any sea. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming out of heaven from God, made ready as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying, ‘Behold, the tabernacle of God is among men, and He dwelt among them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself will be among them, and He shall wipe every tear from their eyes; and there shall no longer be any death; and there shall no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away. And He who sits on the throne said, ‘Behold, I am making all things new.’” (Revelation 21:1-5a)
